Millau Viadact and incredible gorges -Day 18

Millau, Sainte Enimie

Monday, 8 October 2012
It took us a bit to pack up after having been settled in. Nerida came up early for the linen but she was beautifully related about what time we finally left. She invited us down for coffee (in fact she had come up the day earlier as they had friends visiting who were Kiwi's) but we were running so late we needed to get on the road.
We headed off towards Millau and stopped somewhere to pick up lunch from a bakery. The point behind Millau was the spectacular viaduct itself. This wasn't here the last time we were in this past of the world. Bruce desperately wanted to drive over it...so €6each way (!) we did it! We met some English people when we stopped at the Aire to take photos who told us how long it used to take...they pointed out a wee bridge in Millau and told us of the 3 hours of crawl to get through!
We then drove to Sainte Enimie. This I think was one of the most spectacular drives we have done this holiday - but then much of the landscape has been amazing. The cliffs are so beautiful. There are tons of camping sites and kayaking operations. I'm sure there are many different routes through this area and all would be fascinating. An area I think it worth spending some time in - but you really need good weather. The river is the Tarn (I think) and we think we are clean and green in New Zealand - this is pristine!
We found our Chambre D'Hote after missing it the first time we drove past - we ended up parking and walking down. Michelle was out but she had left a note saying she would be home at 6.00 so we picked up the camera's and had an explore of this gorgeous wee town. It is another one of of plus beaux villages de France and we can see why! The town dates from the 6th century.
We were up a number of stairs in our Chambre D'Hote and and I are getting very good at lugging gear up staircases. It was very roomy if interestingly decorated. Michael naturally didn't like all the pink! The view out the window was very nice of the old village.
We ate at a restaurant called La Tonelle (I might be spelling this incorrectly) ..it was ...in a tunnel and we very much enjoyed it.
